GST late fee and interest calculator

Late fee runs per day under each Act and stops at a ceiling set by your turnover. Interest runs at 18% a year on the tax you pay in cash, and does not stop at all. This works out both, and what one more day of delay costs.

GSTR-3B — summary and payment

Nil returns are ₹20 a day instead of ₹50, and carry no interest.

Cash portion only. Liability set off from the credit ledger does not attract interest, which is why this figure is usually lower than the portal’s rough estimate.

Turnover decides the ceiling on the late fee, not the daily rate.

Every day you wait adds ₹168. Late fee keeps accruing until it hits the ceiling; interest keeps running regardless.
Late fee is charged separately under the CGST and SGST Acts — half each — so the daily figure you see quoted as ₹50 is ₹25 under each Act. Interest runs at 18% a year from the due date to the date of payment, on the cash portion of the liability only.

Frequently asked

How much is the late fee for GSTR-3B?

₹50 a day in total — ₹25 under the CGST Act and ₹25 under the SGST Act. A nil return is ₹20 a day. The fee is capped per return, and the ceiling depends on your turnover: ₹1,000 per Act up to ₹1.5 crore, ₹2,500 per Act up to ₹5 crore, and ₹5,000 per Act above that. A nil return caps at ₹250 per Act.

How is GST interest calculated?

At 18% a year, from the day after the due date to the date of payment, on the tax actually discharged in cash. Liability set off from your electronic credit ledger does not attract interest — which is why the correct figure is usually lower than the portal’s initial estimate.

Does the late fee ever stop growing?

The fee does, once it hits the ceiling for your turnover band. Interest does not — it runs until the tax is actually paid.

Can late fee be waived?

Only by a government notification, which is issued from time to time as an amnesty. It is not something a taxpayer can apply for on their own.

What happens to my customers if I file GSTR-1 late?

The input credit on your invoices does not reach their GSTR-2B, so they cannot claim it in that period. That is usually what prompts the phone call, well before the late fee does.
